What to Know Before Taking the Abortion Pill
If you're pregnant and considering abortion, you've probably heard about the abortion pill.
But before you move forward with a medical abortion, there are a few things to be certain of. Having the right information can help you make a safe, informed choice.
Need someone to talk to? You can text a nurse at (262) 300-7796—it’s free, private, and judgment-free.
Medical Abortion Checklist
1. Be Certain YOu Are Actually Pregnant
This might sound obvious, but in moments of stress or panic, it’s easy to jump ahead before confirming with a reliable test.
Before taking the abortion pill, you need to be sure that you’re actually pregnant. This confirmation should come from a lab-grade pregnancy test and an ultrasound, not just a home test.
It’s also important that any abortion medication is taken under the supervision of a qualified medical provider. Self-managing without support can be unsafe.
2. Know the Status and Stage of Fetal Development
Around 10–20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage.¹ A positive test may confirm pregnancy hormones, but only an ultrasound can confirm whether the pregnancy is developing normally—and that it’s not ectopic.²
Ultrasound also tells you how far along you are. The abortion pill is approved for use up to 70 days (10 weeks) after your last period.³ Knowing your gestational age is crucial to avoid taking the pill too late.
3. Make Sure THis is YOur Decision
You may be hearing strong opinions from people around you. But no matter how emotional or complicated the situation feels, no one has the right to pressure you—not your partner, your friends, or even your family.
Legally, no one can force or manipulate you into an abortion. If you feel pressured, you’re not alone, and support is available.
At New Day Women's Clinic, you can talk with someone who will listen, offer clear information, and support your decision, without judgment or pressure.

4. Know The Risks
Abortion, like any medical procedure, comes with physical and emotional risks.
If you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that hasn't been treated, it can spread during the abortion process. For example, untreated chlamydia can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which increases the risk of infertility or ectopic pregnancy later on.⁴
The abortion pill is also not guaranteed to be reversible. Once the process begins, it can be difficult to stop. However, if you’ve taken the first dose (mifepristone) and change your mind, a treatment using progesterone may be able to counteract its effects if started quickly. Timing is critical, so reach out to a medical provider right away if you’re reconsidering or call the Abortion Pill Reversal 24/7 Hotline at (999) 888-7777 for immediate help.
Some women experience emotional or spiritual distress after an abortion, especially if the decision felt rushed or uncertain at the time.
